Teach Like a Champion

During this assignment for our blog post I had to stop myself from watching more videos and writing about them, I absolutely loved this particular bit of information and will be looking to purchase the book Teach Like a Champion.  I have been in my field experience classroom for just over a week now and a lot of the information that my cooperating teacher does follows along with the information from these videos.  I think there is a lot more to learn about lesson plans but there is so much to learn as to what not to do in the lessons as well.
Video # 1 Teach Like a Champion 2.0 - Wanting to make the book Teach Like a Champion a better book by the notes taken from teachers and the students that can make teachers better for the students.  This is a way to work with teachers to make better teachers; it is all about working together to make everyone better!
Video # 2 Technique 1 No Opt Out - Not allowing the students to get out of something they "don't know" and not letting them to just get away with not doing the work they do not want to do because they say they just do not know.  The students are being given more information to help them get pushed into learning the material and not moving onto another student or ignoring them.  Do not let the students opt out.
Video # 3 Technique 2 Right is Right - This section explains that teachers should not just say the student is right because the students will think they are done doing the work and not pushing themselves onto more learning.  Having the students answer more of the question that is being asked, pushing more answers for the problem at hand and ensuring the students know as much as they can know about the instruction.
Video # 4 Technique 3 Stretch It - Learning does not end with the right answer but adding to that answer.  Make sure to follow up with the answer that the student has given; keep "stretching" out what the original question was asked; this helps to ensure the students know the information presented.
Video # 5 Technique 4 Format Matters -  During this technique, the teacher helps the students format the information/subject matter into a way they are able to understand the most information out of.  Speaking correctly, ensure a sentence is finished and speaking up so the words being spoken are heard clearly.
Video # 6 Technique 5 Without Apology - Do not lower your own expectations as a teacher by teaching something that is not worthy of teaching.  Ensure that everything that is being taught is just as important as to what is on a test, teach up not apologizing to a boring lesson.
Video # 60 Student Engagement and Motivation - Having that one or handful of students that just do not want to be in the class or in the classroom.  Teachers have to change what they are doing in the classrooms to keep the student's thought process more positive vise not wanting to be in the class or involved in the lesson plan.  Students require to be successful, achieve, need recognition for their work and praise from the teacher; this helps to keep them involved in the lesson plan/subject.

  1. When it came to the videos, I too had to stop myself. There was so much knowledge which could have been learned from these videos. The No Opt Out video was also one I watched and highly liked. You see it too often were students don't put in effort and the teacher just gives up on them. With this technique, the teacher is pushing the student to ensure the achieve the lesson. In school, students want to put in just enough work in order to get the grade. The Right is Right technique is not one I watched, but it sounds very interesting. This sounds like when making a rubric, to just put the best score possible so students strive for the best possible. I would agree with you on the topic of teachers having to be more creative to keep students on a positive thought process. If a student is finding learning to be fun and interesting, then they will put forth the effort to achieve academic success.

  2. I related most to the No Opt Out video. I teach High School mainly and this is something that I run across all the time. Students for whatever reason don't want to answer questions. They think that if they say they don't know that the teacher will just move on. They need to understand that we care about their education and what they learn and maybe they will start to care as well!
